THE LABORATORY

The Iron Laboratory is a space dedicated to building—
furniture, motorcycles, and objects shaped with purpose.

This isn’t about volume or speed.
It’s about understanding how something is made, refining it, and executing it with intention.

Every piece begins the same way—
a study of structure, proportion, and material.
From there, it’s cut, formed, and assembled with a focus on durability and clarity in design.

The goal is simple:
to create work that holds up over time—visually and structurally.

Steel & Structure exists alongside this as a written extension of the process—
where ideas, methods, and observations are documented in a more complete way.

The work is led by Jamie Olinghouse.

Raised in Michigan, my background is rooted in construction, fabrication, and blacksmithing, along with a 15-year career as a Union Ironworker. I am also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the post–Gulf War era.

I’ve always been drawn to physical and honest work—operating machinery, working with tools, and building with intention. That mindset carries directly into The Iron Laboratory.

The workshop is currently being established in Costa Rica. What began as a shift in environment became an opportunity to reset, refine the process, and commit more fully to the work—on my own terms.

The focus remains the same:
to bring ideas into reality through discipline, restraint, and respect for the craft.

This is ongoing work.
Built piece by piece.
